Tragic Pedestrian Accident Claims Life of Troy Man on Watervliet Shaker Road in Colonie
COLONIE, N.Y. — The Town of Colonie is mourning the tragic loss of Gregory Browne, a 59-year-old resident of Troy, who was struck and killed by a vehicle on Wednesday evening, October 29th, in a heartbreaking motor vehicle versus pedestrian crash.
According to the Colonie Police Department, officers were dispatched to the scene at approximately 7:59 p.m. after receiving reports of a serious collision in the area of 622 Watervliet Shaker Road. Upon arrival, first responders found Mr. Browne suffering from severe, life-threatening injuries. Despite the rapid response and immediate efforts of Colonie EMS personnel, he was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities say the driver of the vehicle remained on scene, cooperated fully with police, and showed no signs of impairment. Preliminary findings suggest that this was a tragic accident and not the result of reckless or criminal behavior. At this time, no charges have been filed, and police do not expect any to be forthcoming pending the outcome of the full investigation.
The Colonie Police Traffic Safety Unit is actively working to determine the exact circumstances that led to the crash, including factors such as lighting, weather conditions, and pedestrian visibility. The roadway was temporarily closed to traffic Wednesday night as investigators reconstructed the scene and gathered evidence.
Residents in the area described the scene as somber and unsettling, noting the heavy police presence and flashing emergency lights that illuminated the otherwise quiet road. One neighbor shared, “It’s just heartbreaking. You never expect something like this to happen right outside your door. My heart goes out to his family.”
Mr. Browne’s passing has left the Troy and Colonie communities grieving deeply. Known for his friendly nature and kind heart, Gregory Browne was remembered by those who knew him as a genuine, hardworking man who always had a smile for others. Friends and family members have taken to social media to share memories and express their sorrow, describing him as “a wonderful soul taken far too soon.”
As the investigation continues, Colonie Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who has information about the moments leading up to it to contact the Colonie Police Department’s Traffic Safety Division.
This tragedy serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of roadway safety for both drivers and pedestrians—especially during evening hours when visibility is reduced.
The Town of Colonie now joins the Browne family in mourning this devastating loss, holding them close in thought and prayer as they navigate the difficult days ahead.
