PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Community Grieves the Heartbreaking Loss of 17-Year-Old Brodie Slonski, Taconic High Senior Killed in Morningside Shooting
PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The city of Pittsfield is reeling from grief and disbelief following the tragic death of 17-year-old Brodie Slonski, a beloved Taconic High School senior whose life was cut short in a fatal shooting Sunday evening in the city’s Morningside neighborhood. The tragedy has left classmates, teachers, friends, and family heartbroken, mourning the loss of a young man remembered for his kindness, humor, and bright future.
According to the Berkshire District Attorney’s Office, officers from the Pittsfield Police Department responded to reports of gunfire shortly after 8 p.m. on Sunday in the area of Morningside Drive and Tyler Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered Slonski suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite immediate lifesaving efforts and rapid transport to Berkshire Medical Center, he succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities have launched a full investigation into the shooting, which they believe was an isolated incident. The State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Berkshire District Attorney’s Office is assisting in the ongoing investigation. No arrests have been made as of Monday, and police are urging anyone with information to come forward.
The senseless loss has shaken the Pittsfield community to its core. At just 17 years old, Brodie Slonski was described as a hardworking student, a loyal friend, and a young man who was deeply loved by those around him. Teachers at Taconic High School spoke of him as a bright, dedicated senior with big plans for his future — plans that have now been tragically cut short.
“Brodie had such an infectious energy,” said one of his teachers through tears. “He was the kind of student who made the classroom better just by being there — always kind, always willing to help others, and full of life. This is an unbearable loss for all of us.”
Friends and classmates have flooded social media with tributes and memories, sharing photos, stories, and heartfelt messages. Many expressed disbelief, recalling his warm smile and the positive impact he made in their lives. “He was one of the good ones,” one friend wrote. “He didn’t deserve this — none of us can believe he’s gone.”
Outside Taconic High School, a growing memorial of flowers, candles, and handwritten notes now stands as a testament to the love and sorrow pouring from the community. School officials have announced that grief counselors will be available for students and staff in the coming days as they process the devastating loss.
Brodie’s family released a brief statement expressing profound grief and gratitude for the outpouring of support. “Our hearts are shattered,” the family wrote. “Brodie was everything a son, brother, and friend should be — caring, funny, and full of promise. We ask for privacy as we try to navigate this unimaginable pain.”
City leaders, including Mayor Peter Marchetti, also shared condolences, emphasizing the urgent need to address gun violence in the community. “This tragedy is another painful reminder that no community is immune to the devastating effects of violence,” the mayor said. “We must come together to protect our youth and ensure that no more families endure this kind of heartbreak.”
A candlelight vigil is being planned at Pitt Park later this week to honor Brodie’s life, where friends, classmates, and neighbors will gather to share stories, light candles, and celebrate the memory of a young man whose light was extinguished far too soon.
As the investigation continues, the Pittsfield community stands united in mourning — remembering Brodie Slonski not for the way his life ended, but for the love, laughter, and kindness he shared during his 17 precious years. His memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
