COLUMBIA COUNTY, Fla. — Authorities in Columbia County are investigating the death of an inmate who was found unresponsive in his cell early Friday morning. The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that 64-year-old James Michael Millard was discovered lifeless around 6 a.m. inside the Columbia County Detention Facility.
According to officials, correctional staff immediately initiated life-saving measures and called for emergency medical assistance. Despite their efforts, Millard was pronounced deceased at the scene shortly after first responders arrived.
In a statement released later that morning, the sheriff’s office noted that there were no apparent signs of foul play at this time. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) has taken over the investigation, which is standard protocol in cases involving in-custody deaths. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the official cause and manner of death.
Authorities say they are committed to maintaining full transparency as the investigation progresses. “We extend our condolences to the family of Mr. Millard during this difficult time,” the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office said in a brief press release.
James Michael Millard’s death marks yet another somber moment for the Columbia County community, prompting renewed attention to inmate health and safety protocols within local detention facilities. As FDLE investigators continue their work, the sheriff’s office has pledged to cooperate fully to ensure all facts surrounding the incident are brought to light.
