Westchester County Police are looking into a serious early-morning roadway incident involving a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction on the northbound Hutchinson River Parkway in New Rochelle.
At around 4:12 a.m., a patrol officer heading south noticed two vehicles that had just come to an abrupt stop near Webster Avenue. The scene showed clear signs that both automobiles had made significant contact moments earlier. Officers immediately approached the vehicles and discovered that the individual operating the opposite-direction car was unresponsive. They quickly removed him from the driver’s seat and began life-saving efforts.
Emergency personnel from the New Rochelle Fire Department and Empress EMS soon arrived and took over care. The man, believed to be in his 30s, was transported to Westchester Medical Center, where medical professionals later confirmed that he had passed shortly after 5:00 a.m.
Based on early findings, investigators believe the Toyota Prius he was driving entered the parkway from Webster Avenue while moving in the wrong direction. Authorities had not yet received any alerts about a vehicle traveling improperly or about any road incident in that area, which suggests that this event happened just moments before the patrol officer discovered it.
The second vehicle involved, a Cadillac Escalade, was occupied by a driver and two passengers. They reported only minor discomfort and were assisted at the scene by first responders.
Patrol officers, along with detectives from the General Investigations Unit, are continuing to review all details to understand exactly what led to the early-morning roadway event.
The name of the man who passed is being withheld until his loved ones are notified.
