CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Authorities in North Carolina are continuing an in-depth investigation into a heartbreaking incident that unfolded earlier this week outside a Charlotte-area child care facility, leaving a family grieving and a community shaken.
According to official court documents, the incident occurred around 3 a.m. Monday outside Tender Heart Child Care Inc., a 24-hour day care center located along Sharon Amity Road. The quiet of the early morning hours was disrupted when a woman inside the building became alarmed after hearing loud noises from outside.
An affidavit states that the victim’s wife immediately contacted emergency services after sensing something was wrong. She attempted to reach her husband by phone but received no response. When she went outside to check, she found him unresponsive in the driver’s seat of a vehicle parked near the facility.
The man was later identified as 44-year-old Alvert Lowery. Emergency personnel arrived quickly and transported him to Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center, where medical teams worked to save him. Despite their efforts, Lowery sadly passed away as a result of his injuries.
Investigators later reviewed surveillance footage from the area, which revealed that the incident occurred only hours after Lowery had confronted individuals who were allegedly attempting to tamper with a vehicle nearby. Authorities believe this earlier encounter may be connected to what happened later that morning.
As the investigation progressed, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department announced on Friday that two individuals had been taken into custody in connection with the case. The suspects were identified as 33-year-old Rethanachantra Em and 32-year-old Borein Ngiem. Both now face serious charges as the legal process moves forward.
In the meantime, loved ones are remembering Alvert Lowery as they struggle to cope with his sudden loss. The incident has also sparked renewed conversations within the community about safety, especially around facilities that operate around the clock.
