San Carlos Apache Community Mourns the Tragic Death of Jessie Russell Sr. as Police Launch Homicide Investigation Near Apache Gold Casino

SAN CARLOS, Ariz. — The San Carlos Apache community is reeling in grief following the tragic death of Jessie Russell Sr., a respected and well-loved member of the San Carlos Apache Tribe, whose life was taken in what authorities are now investigating as a homicide. The incident occurred on Monday afternoon, October 27, 2025, near the entrance to the Apache Gold Casino along U.S. Highway 70, a normally bustling area now marked by heartbreak and disbelief.

According to the San Carlos Apache Police Department (SCAPD), officers responded to reports of a disturbance and possible shooting just after 2:15 p.m. Upon arrival, officers discovered Jessie Russell Sr. unresponsive with apparent injuries consistent with foul play. Despite immediate life-saving efforts by emergency personnel, Russell was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives quickly secured the area as a crime scene and launched a homicide investigation. The FBI, along with the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) and Gila County Sheriff’s Office, have joined local authorities in the investigation, given that the incident occurred on tribal land. As of Tuesday morning, officials have not announced any arrests, and details about potential suspects or motives remain under investigation.

“This is a deeply painful loss for our community,” said San Carlos Apache Police Chief Allen Naiche. “Jessie Russell Sr. was known and loved by many. We are fully committed to finding answers and ensuring justice for his family and our people.”

The tragic death of Russell has sent shockwaves throughout the San Carlos Apache Reservation, where he was known as a man of integrity, wisdom, and compassion. Community members describe him as someone who embodied Apache values — humility, respect, and service to others.

“Jessie was the kind of person everyone looked up to,” said a longtime friend. “He cared about our people, our land, and our traditions. He always had time to help others, to offer guidance, or just to share a good laugh.”

Those who knew him say Russell was more than just a community member — he was a mentor, an elder, and a bridge between generations. He often participated in cultural events, tribal ceremonies, and youth programs, encouraging young people to stay connected to their heritage and to live with honor.

“He taught us that being Apache means taking care of one another,” said one community leader. “That’s how he lived his life — always giving, always caring. His loss leaves a hole in our hearts.”

Family members describe Jessie as a devoted father, grandfather, and friend who found joy in simple things — storytelling, working outdoors, and spending time with family. His passing has left loved ones devastated, struggling to comprehend the senseless act that took his life.

A memorial gathering is being organized at the San Carlos Apache Wellness Center later this week, where friends, family, and tribal members will come together to honor Jessie’s life, share memories, and pray for healing. Tribal leaders are also urging community members to come forward with any information that may assist investigators.

“We must stand united in times like this,” said San Carlos Apache Tribal Chairman Terry Rambler. “Jessie was one of our own — a man of great spirit and humility. Our hearts are with his family. We will not rest until justice is served.”

The FBI and San Carlos Apache Police Department are encouraging anyone with information regarding the homicide to contact the SCAPD tip line or the FBI Phoenix Field Office. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through the FBI’s website.

As the investigation continues, the San Carlos Apache community is left to mourn a life stolen far too soon — a man who represented the best of what it means to live with purpose, love, and respect.

While his passing has brought profound sorrow, those who knew Jessie Russell Sr. say his spirit will continue to guide the community he so deeply cherished. His teachings, his laughter, and his unwavering commitment to his people will live on, reminding all who knew him that even in tragedy, the strength of the Apache spirit endures.
