PORTLAND, Ore. — The Portland community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 39-year-old Derrik M. Rice, who was shot and killed Monday evening, October 27, 2025, in Northeast Portland. What began as an ordinary evening quickly turned into an unimaginable tragedy that has left family, friends, and neighbors devastated as police continue their investigation into the deadly shooting.
According to the Portland Police Bureau (PPB), officers responded to reports of gunfire around 8:45 p.m. in the area of Northeast 122nd Avenue and Sandy Boulevard. When they arrived, they found Rice suffering from multiple gunshot wounds outside a local apartment complex. Despite life-saving efforts by emergency responders and paramedics, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators from the PPB Homicide Unit were called to the area and immediately began collecting evidence, interviewing witnesses, and reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses. As of Tuesday morning, no arrests had been made, and police have not released information on possible suspects or motives.
The scene remained cordoned off for several hours as detectives processed the area and spoke with residents, many of whom described hearing several gunshots followed by shouting and the sound of screeching tires.
“It was terrifying,” said one neighbor. “You hear things like this on the news, but when it happens outside your window, it’s a whole different feeling. My heart breaks for that man’s family.”
Family members identified the victim as Derrik M. Rice, a lifelong Portland resident remembered for his kind heart, strong work ethic, and dedication to those he loved. Known among his friends as “D,” Derrik was described as a man who brought people together, often the first to offer help and the last to ask for it.
“Derrik had the biggest heart,” said his sister, Amanda Rice. “He loved his family more than anything. He was the kind of person who would give you his last dollar if you needed it. Losing him this way is something we’ll never understand.”
Friends say Derrik worked in construction and had recently been planning to start his own small contracting business. Outside of work, he loved spending time with his children, watching basketball, and helping his neighbors with home projects. To those who knew him best, Derrik was more than a friend — he was family.
“He was the glue that held people together,” said longtime friend James Tyler. “He had this energy — this way of making everyone feel seen and cared for. Portland lost a real one.”
As the investigation continues, the Portland Police Bureau is urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward. Tips can be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers of Oregon at www.crimestoppersoforegon.com or by calling 503-823-HELP (4357).
This tragedy marks yet another painful reminder of the ongoing struggle with gun violence in Portland, which has claimed far too many lives in recent years. City leaders and community advocates are once again calling for unity, compassion, and proactive measures to address the root causes of violence while supporting those left behind.
A candlelight vigil in Derrik’s memory is scheduled for Thursday evening at Fernhill Park, where friends, family, and community members will gather to honor his life and share stories of the man who meant so much to so many.
As those closest to Derrik grapple with their grief, they are choosing to remember the joy he brought into their lives — his laughter, his strength, and his unwavering kindness. Though his life was taken far too soon, the impact of Derrik M. Rice’s spirit will live on forever in the hearts of those who loved him and in the community he helped brighten with his warmth and generosity.
