BROWNSVILLE, Texas — One Killed, One Injured in High-Speed Crash on FM 3248; DPS Investigating Street Racing Incident

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A devastating early-morning crash in Brownsville has left one man dead and a woman injured after what authorities believe was a street racing incident involving two vehicles. The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is investigating the fatal crash, which occurred around 1 a.m. Monday on FM 3248 near Dr. Hugh Emerson Road.

According to a news release from Texas DPS, troopers responded to the scene after receiving reports of a severe single-vehicle accident. A preliminary investigation revealed that a 2004 black Chevrolet Silverado, occupied by a man and a woman, was traveling westbound on FM 3248 while racing a Chevrolet Camaro when the driver lost control of the vehicle.

Investigators say the Silverado veered off the roadway, struck a ditch, and overturned multiple times before coming to rest in a nearby field. The violent impact caused catastrophic damage to the truck. The male driver, whose identity has not yet been released pending family notification, was pronounced dead at the scene. The female passenger sustained serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Her condition remains unknown.

The driver of the Chevrolet Camaro involved in the alleged race did not stop and fled the scene. DPS troopers and local law enforcement are actively working to identify and locate the second vehicle and its driver. Authorities are urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has information about the Camaro to contact Texas DPS or Cameron County Crime Stoppers immediately.

“This was a preventable tragedy,” said a DPS spokesperson. “Street racing is illegal and extremely dangerous. It not only endangers those involved but also innocent people who share the road. We’re asking the community to help us identify the other driver and bring accountability to this case.”

Residents who live near the crash site described being jolted awake by the sound of screeching tires and a loud crash in the early hours of the morning. “It was terrifying,” said one local witness. “We heard the impact, and by the time we got outside, the truck was completely destroyed. It’s something you never forget.”

The deadly crash has reignited concerns about illegal street racing in the Brownsville area. Local authorities have seen a troubling rise in nighttime racing activity on rural roads, and officials are now renewing calls for stricter enforcement and community awareness to prevent further tragedies.

Friends and family members of the victim are mourning his sudden and heartbreaking death. Social media posts from loved ones describe him as a hardworking, kind, and spirited individual who loved cars but always put others first. “He didn’t deserve to go like this,” wrote one friend. “He had so much life ahead of him. We’ll never forget you.”

As investigators continue their work, DPS has reiterated the dangers of reckless driving and high-speed racing, reminding motorists that one moment of thrill-seeking can lead to lifelong consequences — or the loss of a life.

The crash on FM 3248 near Dr. Hugh Emerson Road remains under investigation. Authorities are expected to release additional information as it becomes available, including the identities of those involved once families have been notified.

For now, the Brownsville community grieves yet another life lost to preventable circumstances — a sobering reminder that speed and competition on public roads can turn deadly in an instant.
