Upstate South Carolina Coach Removed From School Event Following Disruption

An incident at Carver Middle School in Spartanburg created unexpected interruptions during a school sports event on Thursday night, leading to the removal of a visiting coach from the premises.

According to information shared by the Spartanburg Police Department, a physical education instructor and athletics coach from Boiling Springs Middle School, identified as Nicholas Brannon, became involved in a tense situation while attending a game inside the Carver Middle School gymnasium.

Officials say the School Resource Officer (SRO) was alerted by the school principal, who requested that Brannon be escorted out due to an earlier disagreement involving school personnel, parents, and several attendees.

The SRO reportedly approached Brannon several times and explained that school leadership had asked him to leave the event. Despite repeated conversations, authorities say Brannon declined to follow the request and continued to challenge the officer’s instructions.

Police noted that the SRO, the principal, and an additional responding officer guided Brannon to another area of the school in an effort to calm the situation. During that time, Brannon allegedly raised his voice toward the principal, further escalating tensions.

Moments later, Brannon walked out of the room without permission and returned to the gym while the matchup was still in progress. Authorities say he approached the scorer’s table and began directing loud remarks toward those in the stands, creating another wave of disruption that halted attention from the game.

Due to growing concerns for the well-being of students, educators, players, and spectators, the SRO determined that Brannon needed to be removed for everyone’s safety. He was taken into custody after reportedly resisting efforts to guide him away from the area.

Brannon was transported to the Spartanburg County Detention Center, where he faces accusations including remaining on school property after being told to leave, behavior that caused a public disturbance, and resisting the actions of officials.

The Spartanburg Police Department emphasized its ongoing commitment to ensuring safe, orderly environments at school functions and expressed appreciation to Carver Middle School staff for their cooperation throughout the event.
