Authorities in Dekalb County are working to understand the circumstances surrounding a heartbreaking situation discovered early this week. According to officials, a woman was found unresponsive in the roadway, prompting an immediate response from local deputies and emergency personnel. A second individual, a 27-year-old man, was also located at the scene when authorities arrived.
Investigators noted that a firearm registered to the man had been placed on the hood of his truck. According to statements released by Dekalb County Sheriff Patrick Ray Dunaway, the man has been fully cooperative as the inquiry moves forward, and detectives are working to piece together the sequence of events that led to the tragedy.
The woman was later identified as Ashleigh McKinzie, age 41, a respected associate professor in Middle Tennessee State University’s Department of Sociology and Anthropology. Her passing has deeply impacted the MTSU community, where colleagues, students, and friends knew her as a dedicated educator, researcher, and mentor.
In a public message shared on X, the department confirmed her role at the university and extended heartfelt support to those affected by the loss. MTSU leadership encouraged students, faculty members, and staff to seek assistance through MTSU Counseling Services or the university’s Employee Assistance Program, both of which are offering additional resources during this difficult time.
As investigators continue gathering details and interviewing those involved, the community remains hopeful for clarity and comfort for everyone touched by this sudden and painful event.
